Golden Hour Photography Tips: Best Times to Shoot in Calicut

Sep 18, 2026

If you have ever scrolled through a stunning Instagram feed and wondered why the photos look so warm, soft, and magical, the secret is usually the time of day. In the creative industry, we call it the "Golden Hour." As a model and creative director who shoots extensively outdoors, understanding the light is crucial. Here are my top golden hour photography tips for Calicut.

What is the Golden Hour?

The golden hour is the period of daytime shortly after sunrise and shortly before sunset. During this time, the sun is low on the horizon, filtering through more of the Earth's atmosphere. This produces a soft, warm, diffused light that is incredibly flattering on skin tones—no harsh shadows under the eyes or glowing foreheads!

The Best Times in Kozhikode

Because Kerala is close to the equator, our golden hour is relatively short. You have to be quick!

Tips for Nailing the Shot

When working a golden hour photography session in Calicut, speed is everything.

1. Arrive Early: If you want sunset photos, arrive by 4:30 PM. Use the harsher light to figure out your angles and test poses so that when the light turns golden, you are just firing the shutter.

2. Shoot Backlit: The classic golden hour look is achieved by placing the sun directly behind the model. This creates a beautiful glowing "rim light" around their hair. (Just make sure the photographer slightly overexposes the face so it doesn't become a dark silhouette).

3. Use a Reflector: A simple, cheap gold or white reflector held just out of frame can bounce that beautiful warm light right back into the model's eyes, making them sparkle.

Timing is everything when it comes to outdoor shoots. Ready to capture some golden hour magic in Kerala? Let's plan your shoot!
