5 Common Video Editing Mistakes Kerala Creators Make

Oct 7, 2026

With the rise of mobile editing apps, everyone is a video editor these days. While accessibility is great, I constantly see local brands and influencers ruining great footage with amateur editing choices. If you want your content to stand out, avoid these 5 common video editing mistakes Kerala creators make.

1. Overusing Cheesy Transitions

Just because your editing software has a "Star Wipe" or a "Spinning 3D Cube" transition doesn't mean you should use it. Amateurs use flashy transitions to cover up bad cuts. Professionals rely heavily on simple "hard cuts" or subtle cross-dissolves. Flashy transitions look cheap and distract from the story.

2. Ignoring Audio Levels

This is the biggest mistake I see on Instagram and YouTube. The background music is so loud that you can't hear what the person is saying. Always "duck" (lower) the music track when someone is speaking. A good rule of thumb is to keep background music at least -15db to -20db below dialogue.

3. Terrible Color Grading

Applying a heavy, unnatural Instagram filter over your entire video ruins the skin tones. The lush green landscapes of Kerala shouldn't look neon, and a person's face shouldn't look bright orange. Learn basic color correction first—balancing white balance and exposure—before applying any stylized LUTs or grades.

4. Bad Pacing (Leaving Dead Air)

Holding on a shot of a beautiful Calicut sunset for 15 seconds might feel cinematic to you, but the viewer on Instagram will scroll away after 3 seconds. Edit tight. Remove dead air at the beginning and end of clips. Keep the narrative moving forward constantly.

5. Inconsistent Aspect Ratios

If you are making a Reel (9:16 vertical), don't just drop a horizontal (16:9) video into the middle of it leaving massive black bars on the top and bottom. Scale the footage to fill the frame, or use creative blurring techniques for the background to maintain a professional, cohesive look.

Editing is hard, but you don't have to do it alone. Hire a freelance video editor in Kozhikode to give your content the professional polish it deserves!
